Maybe you've considered picking up a bottle of Lush Locks Nourishing Organic Hair Oil and you're wondering why we chose each of the beautiful oils that went into the bottle - or maybe you're just curious about how to make the best oil for hair growth and thickness.
Either way, this article explains why we chose each of the seven natural ingredients that make up our organic hair oil.
Our Organic Hair Oil
Our ingredient choices don't always follow the norm!
For example, Lush Locks has some interesting ingredients such as organic jojoba oil and organic rosehip oil; which are typically used in skin serums and anti-aging products.
Our selection has left us with an organic hair product which helps hair to look glossy and feel easier to manage; with a beautiful natural scent of roses and citrus.
Let's take a look at each of the seven ingredients in turn and why they were selected:
Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil (Caprylic / Capric triglyceride)
Organic Golden Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)
Organic Rosehip Oil (Rosa rubignosa)
Organic Macadamia Oil (Macadamia Integrifolia)
Organic Geranium Rose Oil (Pelargonium graveolens)
Organic Lime Oil (Citrus aurantifolia)
- Organic Lemon Oil (Citrus limon)
Geranium Rose Oil for Hair Growth
Not only does Geranium Rose Essential Oil have a beautiful scent, it also has a wide range of uses.
Whether using it for hair, skin or even nails - it's been one of my favourite oils for years so you'll see it cropping up again and again in Natural Cosmetics products!
It's a key ingredient in Lush Locks and is one of the main reasons that the oil makes your hair smell fantastic. Also, Olivia from Ecodrop Essential Oils has done a fantastic job of explaining why you should be using Geranium Rose Essential oil in your hair in this article.
In the article, Olivia explains that Geranium Rose Essential Oil is great for:
- Mood boosting
- Repairing, protecting and nourishing
- Promoting hair growth
She even includes some DIY conditioner and hair spray recipes. I haven't tried these recipes myself but it sounds interesting!
My one note before you read the article is to be careful with the difference between a "teaspoon" a "cup" and a "drop" of the various ingredients. The best way to measure your essential oil formula is by weight to make sure you're creating safe blends.
Jojoba Oil for Dry Scalp Flakes
Jojoba oil is fantastic.
It's used in anti-ageing skin serums, products which help scars and stretch marks and baby oil products; so it's got to be good stuff!
When we were blending Lush Locks we were investigating the best dry scalp treatment available. We knew we wanted to blend something special, not just a generic hair product full of synthetic rubbish which hurt your hair and harmed the planet.
We wanted to make sure that whatever oil we blended would not only make hair feel silky smooth and smell fantastic - we wanted your hair to have a healthy shine, without any worries of having dry scalp flakes!
We were so pleased when we read Krissy Brady's article on Prevention.com because we knew that our supplier provided great Jojoba Oil - one of the many benefits of your supplier working directly with the people who grow the plants.
In her article you'll learn 11 ways to use jojoba oil for healthy skin and hair. The main benefits which convinced us to use it as a key ingredient of Lush Locks were:
- Condition Hair
- Ditch Dandruff
- Protect Against Damage
- Promote Hair Thickness and Growth
- Delay Grays
The extra skin benefits were also a massive plus!
Lime Oil for Shiny Hair
We had already decided that Rose was going to be a key note in Lush Locks and wanted to keep the scent fresh and light. Oils with a heavy floral scent tend to smell pretty old fashioned - I don't know about you but when I smell nothing but patchouli, chamomile and ylang ylang I think about my grandmother knitting...
So it was important that we added a citrus scent to lighten the fragrance and provide you with something that you're excited to wear in your hair! We love the aroma of oils like Bergamot and Grapefruit, but Lime in particular is excellent for your hair -
"It adds shine to the hair as the acidity of the fruit causes the hair cuticles to lie flat, meaning they'll reflect more light."
For anyone that wants a toning and brightening effect in their hair, lime oil is a fantastic choice, so we included it in Lush Locks!
Fractionated Coconut Oil to Deal with Frizz
Many people are seeing the benefit of Lush Locks not only as an Organic Hair Oil but also for moisturising their skin, hands, nails, elbows, etc.
The fact people are using Lush Locks for many uses other than reducing the appearance of frizz and flyaways is very exciting for us - it's the reason we blended this versatile oil with the exact mix we chose!
However, Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil is specifically great for dealing with frizz and is found in many hair products, so we chose this as the primary ingredient. It's an odourless, clear, light oil which is fast absorbing and typically used in various hair serums for its many benefits to your hair.
Stylecraze wrote this great article, which explains the benefits of Fractionated Coconut Oil in greater detail. In the article they explain how it helps you deal with frizzy and dry hair and restores the hydration to the scalp.Your hair will become silky and glossy after using this oil so we thought it the perfect candidate for our primary ingredient!
Rosehip Oil for Hair Repair
- Repair damaged hair
- Renew damaged scalp tissue
- Moisturize hair
The Hair Experts at Viviscal have written a great article about all of the benefits of using Rosehip oil on your hair and scalp. A personal highlight from the article is where it says:
"The soothing oil is also ideal for calming itchy, dry or irritated skin and reducing scalp conditions such as dandruff. It also reportedly has helped correct skin concerns such as lines, scars, stretch marks and dark spots."
...which sums up exactly why we love rosehip oil at Natural Cosmetics. This multi purpose oil doesn't come cheap, but it's one of our favourite ingredients for hair and skin serums - it's worth every penny!
Macadamia Oil to Hydrate Hair
After reading an article on Healthline, which was written by Kathryn Watson and medically reviewed by Debra Rose Wilson, Ph.D. - we decided to include Macadamia Oil in Lush Locks Nourishing Organic Hair Oil.
Macadamia oil is rich in fatty acids that bind to hair and make it stronger and easier to manage. For certain hair types, macadamia oil may very well be a “miracle ingredient” that hydrates hair without making it appear heavy. This fits very well with the excellent feedback we've had for Lush Locks Nourishing Organic Hair Oil.
The goal for Lush Locks Nourishing Organic Hair Oil was to create a natural, organic product which helps hair to look shiny and smooth, feels soft and easy to manage while smelling fantastic. Macadamia is a crucial part of making that happen!
The article confirmed our belief that Macadamia Oil can make hair stronger, smoother and easier to manage - therefore making it a key ingredient of Lush Locks Nourishing Organic Hair Oil.
Lemon Oil to Balance Sebum Production
For our final ingredient, we decided to add a second citrus punch.
The scent beautifully balances the notes of rose and lime and leaves Lush Locks with an uplifting, fresh fragrance that we're happy to have in our hair all day. If you have particularly long hair which hangs near your face, there's nothing worse than having to deal with the smell of oils like organic Argan which has a 'distinct aroma' (likely a result of where it comes from... manure).
You can easily maintain hair which smells like roses, looks shiny and healthy while feeling soft. You just need the right blend of natural ingredients!
Devri Velasquez writes for Naturally Curly explaining that lemon oil doesn't only have aromatherapuetic effects and use as an antiseptic - it's also superb to use in your hair as it helps to naturally balance sebum production.
